Overview

UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) is ideal for low-friction, high-impact applications. Pearson provides access to precision UHMW machining — fulfilled either in-house or through our certified Canadian partner network. Whether you're building guides, bushings, or food-grade liners, we manage quality control, inspection, and delivery every step of the way.

UHMW machining overview

Our UHMW Capabilities

Whether machined in-house or through our Canadian supplier network, Pearson offers access to the following UHMW services:

  • CNC Milling: slotting, profiling, pocketing & surfacing of UHMW sheets & blocks
  • Manual Machining: trimming, drilling & custom modifications
  • Turning: bushings, rollers, guides & wear sleeves
  • Slotting & Boring: burr-free through-holes, keyed slots & bearing fits
  • Prototyping: fast one-off parts for fit testing & development
  • Chamfering & Deburring: smooth, user-safe edges & ready-to-assemble surfaces

Benefits of UHMW

  • Ultra-low friction for long wear life
  • Exceptional abrasion & impact resistance
  • Chemical- and food-safe for sanitary applications
  • Excellent vibration damping in material handling
  • Lightweight & corrosion-proof in wet environments

Our Equipment

We use the following equipment in-house and coordinate with partners who specialize in UHMW machining:

  • 3-axis & 4-axis CNC mills with plastic-specific tooling
  • Manual knee mills & turret lathes for small runs
  • Precision drill presses & tapping rigs with soft-material chucks
  • Boring bars & reamers optimized for UHMW
  • Air-blast chip control systems for clean machining
  • Deburring & polishing stations for final finish

Common UHMW Applications

  • Conveyor belt guides & wear strips
  • Food-grade cutting boards & liners
  • Packaging chutes, rails & guides
  • Bearing surfaces & slide blocks
  • Impact buffers & vibration dampeners

UHMW FAQ

What tolerances can you hold on UHMW parts?

We routinely achieve ±0.002″ (±0.05 mm) on critical features. Tighter tolerances may be supported depending on geometry and whether the work is done in-house or by a certified partner.

Is UHMW suitable for food-grade applications?

Yes—UHMW is FDA-compliant and we machine food-grade plastics in a dedicated plastic-handling area. Some production is fulfilled through trusted Canadian partners with the same standards.

How do you control heat buildup when machining UHMW?

Whether done in-house or through our partner network, we use optimized feeds, high-flow air or mist coolant, and chip evacuation to prevent thermal distortion.

What maximum thicknesses can you machine?

Our in-house equipment handles up to 12″ thick and 96″ long. For larger UHMW jobs, we coordinate machining through our Canadian manufacturing partners.

Is this manufactured in-house?

Some UHMW parts are machined in-house at our Ontario facility. Others are fulfilled through our trusted network of Canadian machining partners. Pearson oversees the entire process to ensure consistent results.
