Quick Specs

Common Names
UHMW-PE, PE1000, TIVAR®
Key Traits
Ultra-low friction; high abrasion/impact resistance
Food Contact
FDA/USDA grades available
Typical Ops
Milling, turning, boring, drilling
MaterialWear / FrictionDimensional StabilityNotes
UHMW-PEExcellent wear; very low frictionModerate (may relax post-machining)Great for guides/liners; food-contact grades
Acetal (Delrin®)Good wear; low frictionHigh (stiffer; holds tolerance well)Precision gears, bushings, fixtures
Nylon 6/66Good wear; low frictionMedium (absorbs moisture)Higher strength; consider humidity effects

Service temperature for general-purpose UHMW is typically up to ~82 °C / 180 °F; plan clearances for thermal expansion.

Our UHMW Capabilities

Whether machined in-house or through our Canadian supplier network, Pearson offers:

  • CNC Milling: slotting, profiling, pocketing & surfacing of UHMW sheets & blocks
  • Turning: bushings, rollers, guides & wear sleeves
  • Drilling & Threading: burr-controlled holes & threads in soft material
  • Slotting & Boring: keyed slots, bearing fits & through-holes
  • Manual Machining: trimming, drilling & custom one-off mods
  • Prototyping: fast one-off parts for fit testing & development
  • Edge Prep: chamfering & deburring for user-safe, ready-to-install parts

Benefits of UHMW

  • Ultra-low friction for long wear life
  • Excellent abrasion & impact resistance
  • Food-contact grades available; low moisture absorption
  • Good chemical resistance & vibration damping
  • Lightweight & corrosion-proof in wet environments

Our Equipment

We use the following equipment in-house and coordinate with partners who specialize in UHMW machining:

  • 3-axis & 4-axis CNC mills with plastic-specific tooling
  • Manual knee mills & turret lathes for small runs
  • Precision drill presses & tapping rigs with soft-material chucks
  • Boring bars & reamers optimized for UHMW
  • Air-blast/mist cooling & chip evacuation systems
  • Deburring & polishing stations for final finish

Common UHMW Applications

  • Conveyor wear strips, chain guides & rails
  • Food-grade cutting boards, liners & star wheels
  • Packaging chutes, slides & product handling
  • Bearing surfaces, slide blocks & wear pads
  • Impact buffers & vibration dampeners

UHMW FAQ

What tolerances can you hold on UHMW parts?

Typical production targets are around ±0.002″ (±0.05 mm) on critical features, subject to geometry and setup. UHMW can “relax” slightly after machining, so we plan process steps to stabilize dimensions.

Is UHMW suitable for food-grade applications?

Yes — FDA/USDA-compliant UHMW grades are available. We machine food-contact plastics in a dedicated handling area and coordinate with partners as needed.

How do you control heat buildup when machining UHMW?

We use sharp tooling, high chip-evacuation rates, air or light mist cooling, and conservative chip loads to avoid melting and edge burring.

What maximum sizes can you handle?

In-house we typically handle up to ~12″ thick and 96″ long. Larger parts are coordinated through our Canadian partner network.

Is this manufactured in-house?

Some UHMW parts are machined in-house at our Ontario facility; others run through vetted Canadian partners. We coordinate sourcing, QA, and logistics end-to-end.
