Quick Specs
Process | Best For | Throughput | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Surface Grinding | Flat plates, die faces, fixture bases | High | Excellent flatness/parallelism; crisp edges |
OD Grinding | Shafts, journals, bearing surfaces | High | Roundness & concentricity control |
ID Grinding | Precision bores, bushings, sleeves | Medium | Tight ID size/finish inside features |
Centerless | Pins, small shafts, bar stock | Very High | High-throughput, uniform diameters |
Honing | Final bore size & surface texture | Medium | Micro-finish & geometry correction (taper/bell) |
Grinding & Honing Capabilities
- Surface grinding with flatness/parallelism to ~±0.0002″ (by review)
- Cylindrical OD/ID grinding for shafts, bushings, sleeves, and housings
- Centerless grinding for pins, dowels, and small-diameter shafts
- Single- and multi-stone bore honing for precision size & finish
- Hard-part grinding (≈RC 60+) and post-heat-treat size correction
- Deburring, edge breaks, and polish finishing of ground faces
- Dimensional, roundness, and surface finish reporting (Ra/Rz)
Representative Equipment
- Precision surface grinders with magnetic chucks & rotary tables
- OD/ID grinding machines with in-process gauging (by routing)
- Centerless grinders for through-feed & in-feed ops
- Sunnen/Nagel-style honing systems with size control
- Coolant filtration & temperature control for stability
- Digital inspection: micrometers, bore gages, profilometers
Typical Applications
- Tooling plates, dies, and precision fixture bases
- Bearing journals and seal diameters on shafts
- Hydraulic valve sleeves, pistons, and precision bores
- Sealing faces, gasket surfaces, and wear plates
- Post-weld or post-heat-treat refinishing and correction
- Repair/restoration of worn cylindrical features
Grinding & Honing FAQs
How do I get a fast grinding/honing quote?
Upload STEP/IGES and a PDF with target sizes/tolerances, material & hardness (pre/post HT), surface finish (Ra), quantities, and any inspection/reporting needs. Photos with a ruler help for repairs.
Can you grind hardened parts and correct distortion after heat treat?
Yes — RC 60+ tool steels are common. We can bring features back to size and geometry after HT; include pre/post-HT dims and finish targets.
What tolerances and finishes are realistic?
Surface to ~±0.0002″ flat/parallel; OD/ID to ~±0.0002″ typical; honing to ~±0.0001–0.0002″ with ~4–8 µin Ra, subject to geometry and setup.
How is work coordinated?
We handle quoting details, DFM, routing, QA, and logistics under a single Pearson-managed workflow.
Do you provide inspection reports and surface readings?
Yes. We can include CoC, FAI/FAIR, bore size charts, and profilometer Ra readings. Note your QA plan on the RFQ.
Can you restore worn shafts or bores?
Often, yes. Options may include chrome or metal spray + grind, sleeve + hone, or oversize/undersize with matched bushings. Send photos and baseline dimensions.
