Overview
Pearson Manufacturing provides access to precision centerless grinding through a hybrid fulfillment model. Whether performed at our Ontario facility or via certified Canadian partners, we deliver smooth, concentric finishes and micron‑level control for cylindrical components.
⚠️ Hybrid fulfillment: some grinding is completed in‑house, others via trusted Canadian partners — all under Pearson QA.

Quick Specs
Method | Best For | Productivity | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Through‑feed | Straight OD, continuous feed | High | Efficient for long runs of uniform OD |
In‑feed (plunge) | Profiles/shoulders, short lengths | High | Great for complex features & shoulders |
Our Capabilities
- High‑precision through‑feed centerless grinding
- In‑feed (plunge) grinding for shoulders, undercuts, and features
- Tight geometric control on roundness, taper, and lobing
- Process development for repeatable production runs
- Grinding of shafts, pins, rods, bushings, and sleeves
- FAI/FAIR and inspection reporting on request
Design for Manufacturability (DFM)
- Provide **grind stock**: generally 0.05–0.20 mm (0.002–0.008″) per side depending on material & length.
- Add **run‑out reliefs/undercuts** at shoulders so the wheel can fully clean up the OD.
- Avoid sharp corners at transitions — specify **chamfer or radius** to reduce wheel loading and burning.
- For short parts, indicate if you allow **carrier/collet witness** or require special fixturing.
- Long slender parts: note **max bow** and request **support strategy** (work‑rest blade, guides, follower).
- Call out **datum scheme** for OD/feature relationships (roundness, parallelism) and gauge method (V‑block, air gauge, CMM).
- Share **pre/post heat‑treat** condition and desired hardness; it affects wheel choice and achievable finish.
We’ll review your drawings and confirm achievable tolerances/finishes with the best routing (in‑house or partner) before kickoff.

Centerless Grinding FAQs
Is centerless grinding performed in‑house or through partners?
Both. We fulfill some centerless grinding jobs at our Ontario facility, while others are completed through trusted Canadian partners based on lead time, material, and volume. We coordinate quoting, QA, and delivery across both routes.
What diameter and length ranges can you handle?
Ranges depend on the specific machine setup. As a guide, many systems cover ~1–100 mm OD, with capability for short components or long bars depending on support tooling. Share your drawing for confirmation and best routing.
What tolerances and finishes are typical?
With the right process, centerless grinding can achieve low‑micron size/roundness and finishes near ~0.1–0.4 µm Ra. Actual results depend on material, wheel selection, and setup.
Do you support both small batches and high volume?
Yes — from single prototypes to large recurring orders. We tune the process and routing for your quantity, schedule, and cost targets.
Which materials can be ground?
Steel, stainless, aluminum, brass, Inconel, and other specialty alloys — matched to appropriate abrasive wheels and coolants.
